Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did an excellent program on conspiracy theories relating to the Coronavirus pandemic. Previously conspiracy theories have been dismissed as crackpot when they relate to the grassy knoll, Jeffrey Epstein, or the moon landing. Now the theories that the pandemic is fake could be deadly as it distracts people from sound scientific advice. The Coronavirus documentary Plandemic was supposed to be shown by Sinclair news media outlets including WJAC-TV in Johnstown. Under public pressure they wisely pulled it from the air.
One of the biggest advocates of these theories is Alex Jones. Below is a profile by PBS Frontline of him. The more popular he gets the more dangerous he gets just like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk.
Donald Trump has used these theories to his political benefit. He is not the first of course. George W. Bush used the theory of a connection between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein to help him win reelection. These actions give an air of legitimacy to these theories making them more dangerous still such as Dr. Stella Immanuel's belief that efforts to stop the virus' spread are harmful.
